Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant Inaugurated, Sets 7 Malaysia Book of Records Entries and Introduces Nation’s First Green System

The Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (WTP), Malaysia’s second-largest WTP, was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The project has set national records in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) and introduced the country’s first green water treatment sludge disposal conveyor system.

This high-impact project is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Federal Government, Selangor State Government, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn. Bhd. (Air Selangor), and Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) – an agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). Langat 2 WTP is part of the Pahang–Selangor Raw Water Transfer Scheme, built to ensure a stable and high-quality water supply for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

With a capacity of 1,130 million litres per day (MLD), the Langat 2 WTP is now fully operational and supplies treated water to users in Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and the Federal Territory of Putrajaya. Built by PAAB for Air Selangor, the project cost RM4.2 billion and directly benefits around 791,000 consumer accounts.

Among the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) achievements from this project:

2024:

  • Longest Dual-Function Treated Water Tunnel
  • Longest Parallel Twin-Treated Water Pipeline Tunnel

2025:

  • First Water Treatment Sludge Transport System Using Conveyor Pipes in Malaysia
  • Longest Water Treatment Sludge Conveyor Pipe Transport System in Malaysia – 1.918km
  • Longest Shaftless Screw Conveyor System in Malaysia – 46m

The plant produces up to 400 tonnes of treatment sludge daily. The implementation of the green disposal conveyor system allows treated sludge to be automatically transported nearly 2 kilometers to the disposal site near Bukit Enggang Balancing Pond, reducing road safety risks and carbon emissions.

The government is now focusing on Langat 2 WTP Phase 2, with a design capacity of 760 MLD and an estimated cost of RM3.669 billion. The project is expected to be completed by 2030 to meet future water supply demands in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, in line with projected population and industrial growth.

The inauguration ceremony of Langat 2 WTP was also attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof.

PETRA remains committed to driving and enhancing water infrastructure development through strategic partnerships between the federal government, state governments, PAAB and water operators. This effort aligns with the Malaysia MADANI aspiration, which emphasises inclusivity and sustainable resources to ensure a safe and quality water supply that supports the nation’s socio-economic development.
