Mitsubishi Chemical Completes Construction of Pilot Wastewater Treatment Facility at Hiroshima Plant
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) announced the successful completion of a new pilot wastewater treatment facility at its Hiroshima Plant, located in Otake City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This initiative marks a significant step toward advancing water resource management and meeting the company’s environmental targets outlined in its “Medium-Term Management Plan 2029.”
Driving Sustainable Water Management
In alignment with its sustainability goals, MCC has prioritised the reduction of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)—an indicator of organic pollution in water—as a key environmental metric. The new facility is designed to develop and test advanced, cost-effective wastewater treatment technologies that will be deployed across MCC’s global network of chemical plants.
“This facility represents our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said a company spokesperson. “By integrating cutting-edge technologies developed by our production engineering and research teams, we aim to significantly reduce COD levels in wastewater and contribute to cleaner water ecosystems.”
Facility Overview
- Facility Name: Pilot Wastewater Treatment Facility
- Location: 20-1 Miyukicho, Otake-shi, Hiroshima Prefecture (Within MCC Hiroshima Plant)
- Construction Start: October 2024
- Operational Launch: September 2025
- Core Capabilities:
- Continuous and batch process testing
- Evaluation under varying wastewater compositions, temperatures, and pH levels
- Integration of multiple treatment methods, including:
- Biological treatment
- Membrane separation
- Advanced oxidation processes
The pilot facility will serve as a testing ground for these technologies before their rollout to other MCC facilities in Japan and overseas. The company also plans to evaluate the feasibility of turning the system into a commercial water treatment solution in the medium to long term.
Toward FY2029 Goals
MCC aims to reduce COD emissions by 310 tons across its domestic plants and group companies by FY2029 (compared to FY2023 levels). The pilot plant is a critical component in achieving this goal, enabling data-driven optimisation and real-world validation of treatment technologies.
