Selangor to Explore Desalination Option for Pulau Indah Water Supply

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor), one of the largest water services providers in Malaysia, and Central Spectrum Sdn Bhd are collaborating in exploring the feasibility of seawater desalination as an alternative water supply solution for Pulau Indah.

The two entities signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) recently on the initiative, witnessed by the Selangor State Minister, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

“Central Spectrum wants to continue expanding its network of commercial hubs. One of the main challenges is water supply. Previously, it involved the extension of a pipeline from Lipat Kajang to Pulau Indah. In terms of supply, I believe it will be sufficient once the Rasau Stage 2 water treatment plant is operational,” Amirudin said after the signing ceremony.

The state is now actively examining seawater desalination as another option to tackle Selangor’s water supply challenge. The minister said, both options have strengths and weaknesses and will be assessed based on cost and efficiency.

“If successful, the desalination project could become a model for other coastal areas in Selangor and could serve sectors that are highly water-dependent, such as tourism and port activities,” added Amirudin.

Desalinated water is safe for drinking but the immediate priority is to meet the demands of Pulau Indah’s growing industrial base.

“What’s most urgently needed at Pulau Indah is industrial water and we aim to meet the need,” commented Amirudin, with current industrial demand in the area standing at 36 million litres per day.
