Hanoi’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant Completed Contributing to Improvement of Public Water Quality
JFE Engineering Corporation, in a joint venture with Tsukishima JFE Aqua Solution Co., Ltd., has completed the construction of the largest sewage treatment plant in Hanoi, the Yen Xa Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was awarded by the City of Hanoi, Vietnam. The two companies were responsible for the detailed design and construction of the project. The work was completed in May 2025, and the completion ceremony was held in August 2025.

In Vietnam, rapid urbanisation accompanying accelerated economic growth has led to severe water pollution of rivers caused by domestic wastewater, and the development of sewage treatment facilities has become a pressing priority. Although the government has set a target of 100% sewerage coverage by 2050, the sewage treatment rate in urban areas remains low at around 20%.
This project consisted of constructing a sewage treatment facility designed to support a national objective. The plant is equipped with nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology, has a daily treatment capacity of 270,000m³, and serves around 1 million people.
Construction began in 2019 and despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, continued steadily, with completion achieved approximately six years later.
The project was financed by a yen loan provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The facility incorporates Japanese technologies, including rapid filtration for water treatment and pipe jacking with electromagnetic detection for construction, thereby realizing the export of high-quality infrastructure.
Going forward, JFE Engineering will continue to contribute to the improvement of living environments overseas and to the realisation of a sustainable society as one of the leading companies in the field of water and sewage treatment plants in overseas markets, by providing Japanese technologies as well as its accumulated expertise and experience.
