World Water Day 2025: PETRA Boosts Water Infrastructure Development in Pahang through 38 Projects Worth RM5.9 Billion

In conjunction with the National-level celebration of World Water Day (WWD) 2025, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the nation’s water security and sustainability by accelerating the implementation of various water infrastructure development projects nationwide, particularly in Pahang.

A total of 38 water development projects worth RM5.9 (USD1.39) billion have been approved under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP), with an allocation of RM504.2 (USD118.82) million for 2025 through the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5). This initiative reflects the Government’s dedication to ensuring access to clean water and sustainable supply services for the people.

The official launch of the WWD celebration took place at Dataran Sayangi Kuantan and was officiated by Dato’ Mohamad Nizar bin Dato’ Sri Mohamad Najib, Chairman of the Pahang State Committee on Investment, Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, representing the Chief Minister of Pahang. Also in attendance was Deputy Secretary-General (Water) of PETRA, Dato’ Mohd Rodzwan bin Mohd Baba Sakri.

More than 2,000 visitors attended the two-day celebration from 4 to 5 July, which featured exhibitions by government and private agencies, including a showcase of the Water Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR 2040), a strategic roadmap for the future of the national water sector. PETRA also presented the Water Sector Development Award and the Ecohydrology Research Award to internationally recognised researchers and higher education institutions.

With the international theme of “Glacier Preservation” and the local theme “Water for Life” along with the slogan “MyWater, MyLife, MyWorld”, the celebration reinforced the shared awareness of water’s value in life and the need for sustainable resource management.

PETRA believes that water infrastructure development must go hand in hand with public education and community participation. Hence, this celebration serves as a national advocacy platform uniting various stakeholders—from students to the private sector—to foster a shared sense of responsibility in safeguarding the nation’s water heritage.

In line with the Malaysia MADANI aspirations, this effort reflects PETRA’s determination to accelerate the implementation of high-impact water projects, ensure the continuity of water supply, and enhance the people’s quality of life in an inclusive and sustainable manner.
