Air Selangor Launches Malaysia’s First Web-based Slope Management System

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) has introduced Malaysia’s first web-based Slope Management System by a water utility, marking a significant step forward in the digital management of geotechnical assets and critical water infrastructure.

The system was officially launched by Adam Saffian Ghazali, Air Selangor Chief Executive Officer, underscoring the utility’s continued investment in digital technologies to enhance infrastructure resilience and operational sustainability.

The initiative began in May 2025 with a comprehensive assessment of 147 engineered and natural slopes located across 28 strategic Air Selangor facilities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. The assessment covered key operational assets, including water treatment plants, dams, reservoirs, pumping stations, balancing ponds and service roads.

Developed as a centralised digital platform, the web-based Slope Management System enables systematic slope inventory management, routine inspections, risk assessments and continuous asset monitoring. The platform consolidates engineering and geospatial data, providing a comprehensive overview of slope conditions and supporting informed, data-driven maintenance decisions.

A key feature of the system is the integration of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, which provide high-resolution terrain mapping and spatial analysis capabilities. These technologies enable engineers to identify potential slope instability at an early stage, allowing mitigation measures to be prioritised before issues develop into major infrastructure risks.

The digital platform is expected to strengthen Air Selangor’s proactive asset management approach by improving inspection efficiency, enhancing risk visibility and supporting preventive maintenance planning. By centralising slope condition data and inspection records, the system also facilitates faster decision-making and more effective resource allocation across geographically dispersed facilities.

The introduction of the Slope Management System reflects the growing adoption of digital technologies within the water sector, where utilities are increasingly leveraging geospatial intelligence, remote sensing and digital asset management to improve operational resilience. As climate change drives more frequent extreme rainfall events, effective slope monitoring has become increasingly important in protecting water infrastructure from geotechnical hazards that could affect operational continuity.

Air Selangor supplies treated water to 9.62 million consumers across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, making the reliability of its infrastructure critical to Malaysia’s largest water service area. The utility has accelerated its digital transformation in recent years through initiatives such as smart asset management, predictive maintenance and the deployment of digital technologies across its operations.

According to Adam Saffian Ghazali, the new system represents another milestone in Air Selangor’s journey towards smarter infrastructure management.

The launch reinforces Air Selangor’s commitment to innovation and sustainable infrastructure management while setting a new benchmark for digital slope management within Malaysia’s water industry. The initiative also demonstrates how advanced geospatial technologies can enhance the safety, reliability and long-term sustainability of critical water assets in an increasingly complex operating environment.
